Sebastian Vettel stayed well ahead of the pack in the second practice session for the Hungarian GP on Friday afternoon with an advantage of half a second over Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari and Mark Webber. Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari was fourth quickest,four-tenths behind his team-mate. There was a good showing for Russia’s Vitaly Petrov, who showed that the mechanical grip of the Renault will work well on tracks where aerodynamic grip is not so important. Robert Kubica was seventh, with the two Renaults sandwiching Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren, which was much better than it had been in the morning session.
Nico Hulkenberg was eighth fastest in his Williams, ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren and Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes, the veteran able to beat his team-mate Nico Rosberg for a change. Behind Michael was Pedro de la Rosa in the Sauber and Rubens Barrrichello in the second Williams. Rosberg was next, ahead of Kamui Kobayashi in the second Sauber. Jaime Alguersuari was next in his Toro Rosso, ahead of the Force India of Adrian Sutil, Sebastien Buemi in the second Toro Rosso and Tonio Liuzzi in the second Force India.
The new teams were headed by the Lotus of Jarno Trulli, ahead of the Virgins of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi, the HRTs of Bruno Senna and Sakon Yamanoto and the troubled second Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen.

1. joe, i have a question 4 you
what is so special with the red bulls? is it their technology or pure drivers brilliance which keeps them going ahead of Ferrari and mclarens almost 90% in setting fastest laps and clinching the pole……………….
sanjeev,
If I knew the answer to that I would make a fortune as an F1 engineer…
The RBR cars didn’t look light on fuel, so I’m guessing McLaren will be out of the frame for a win on Sunday, Ferrari was a different story though, sand bagging perhaps.
Joe, you are a fantastic writer and I love reading your blog but is is necessary to have a pop at Schumacher in every report? (‘For a change’, ‘as usual’) etc
Please take this as constructive criticism….
Great Blog Joe! Always look forward to your insightful and informed thoughts after a GP weekend. Keep the good work up!
Is Webber still using the tub that Vettel rejected?
Joe. What’s your problem with schumacher. I notice little digs at him whenever you mention him.
