Mercedes completes Brawn buyout

February 28, 2011 by Joe Saward

Daimler AG and Aabar Investment have acquired the remaining 24.9 per cent stake in Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd and now own 100 per cent of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix. Daimler has increased its stake from 45.1 per cent to 60 per cent, while Aabar has increased its stake from 30 to 40 per cent. Aabar is the biggest single shareholder of Daimler AG, with nine per cent.

The manufacturer says that the acquisition sends a clear signal concerning the long-term ambitions for the company’s premium brand in Formula 1.

Did Ross have any remaining shares before this buy out?

Do you think Ross wakes up everyday and grins at the good fortune he has had…..first and best Double Diffuser, lucked into the most powerful engine at a time that all was being done to keep teams afloat, got Honda to pay for his first year in charge, budgets slashed all round and to cap it all, sells the team lock stock and barrell for slighty more than the £1 he paid for it…..

    well done !

Hi. You know more about these things than me Joe so, what is the clear signal concerning the long-term ambitions that 100% manufacturer ownership sends?

BMW, Honda and Toyota all had 100% ownership of their teams but that didn’t seem to lead to too much in the way of long-term anything. By contrast, McLaren has been part owned by several parties for years and you get the impression they’ll be around an awfully long time.

How come Mercedes can make the commitment to F1
yet BMW, Honda & Toyota have fled?

Clear signal: “Ross, get us some title competing cars or your out”.

Joe, do you know of any tensions between Ross and Boss haug last year? Seems like the MM boys would be perturbed getting beaten by their own engines in the McLarens.

      GeorgeK,

There was talk of strain but no-one is going to confirm something like that – and certainly not publicly. At the end of the day if the team delivers Haug will be happy as he will get the glory

Joe – it would be interesting to hear some insight as to how much of the credit should go to Ross and how much was already developed prior to him taking over?

Notwithstanding if it was all done prior, he does deserve credit for his entrepreneurship!

If there were ever a mistake of the same scale as Williams losing Adrian Newey, surely it would be Ferrari letting Ross go?

Joe, any idea how much money Ross & Nick have made from the sale of their shares to the folks at Daimler & Aabar?

I think with his track record Mercedes-Benz need Ross more than the other way round don’t you?
