A little help from Daddy

June 15, 2011 by Joe Saward

Most kids these days appreciate a little help from their parents to get them on to the property ladder. It is an expensive business, particularly if you are buying a $150 million house in Holmby Hills, California (between Beverly Hills and Belair). It seems that 22-year-old Petra Ecclestone is under contract to buy The Manor — the 57,000-square-foot home which belongs to Candy Spelling, the widow of television producer Aaron Spelling and mother of actress Tori Spelling. The house includes 123 rooms and includes a double staircase, inspired by the one in “Gone with the Wind”, a beauty salon, a bowling alley, parking for 100 cars. It is believed to be the most expensive on the market in the US.

Appears to be yet another internet rumour latest is that no one knows about it except a crazy unsubstantiated report from news reporter looking for a good story. hardly worth reporting I would have thought except that it shows how obscenely rich Bernie must be

      tony callander,

I fear you need to have your ear closer to the ground. This was reported in The Wall Street Journal. The sourcing will be solid.

The world is a little ridiculous, isn’t it. Why stop at 123 rooms? They’re never going to all be used, so it may as well be 1234!

Wasn’t Bernie also looking at buying into the 1 hyde park development? There is a point when money ceases to mean anything, and that is the point at which people that wealthy should do something constructive with it, rather than squandering it on overpriced property!

This reminds me of a programme I was forced to watch in the waiting room of a garage while getting my car fixed. The name was not clear but it was about nauseatingly rich American women who live in big houses, drive SUVs, and who like to get together, drink champagne and get botox. Watching it cheapened me as a human and almost certainly shortened my life expectancy.

There’s a pic of the place here: http://content.uniquehomes.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Spelling-aerial.JPG

    That’s like 3 times HRT’s budget.

  5. on June 15, 2011 at 09:43 GQsm

If Bernie is letting them spend their inheritance now, at least he can benefit from the new pad when in LA.

  6. on June 15, 2011 at 09:44 Biggus Jimmus

That’s quite a pile. What on earth would you do with all those rooms? Sleep in a different one every night??? Lock away your mentally ill illegitimate inbred offspring???

Much as Bill Gates often seems dubious in his business dealings, at least he’s spending his money well. Perhaps Mr E does as much anonymously, perhaps not…

The Spelling mansion is also known for its gift-wrap room, which is set aside for the purpose of … you guessed it.

  9. on June 15, 2011 at 10:19 Richard K

This is on top of the £45m and £66m Bernie recently spent on houses in London for wife and daughters…

  10. on June 15, 2011 at 10:33 TimW

That sounds just like my place!

JamesF1: Perhaps it was the “Real Housewives Of …” series? My wife occasionally watches that garbage. Hope she does not formulate too many ideas from it.

Good to see some of the $600 million a year F1 gets from governments is being used for something useful.

  13. on June 15, 2011 at 11:40 iain

123 rooms? Wow, she need to go careful,, easy to get lost in there, 57000 acres? surely thats enough room for a GP?

  14. on June 15, 2011 at 11:42 David

Obviously he needed that $40million from Bahrain as a deposit for this

I thought Bernie was buying Saab or at least the company that was buying Saab. But now its being hoicked around to anyone.
Np doubt Miss E has done her sums and worked out that she can afford the gas bill, electricity bill, etc and council tax if they have that dastardly thing in the USA. The maintenance must come to quite a bit too.

Old Saab 900turbo, most comfortable car ever built. Saab GB one of my nicest ever customers. (back 20 years ago)

Her property taxes will be at least $3,000,000 per year. Does she even have some sort of income of her own to support that or will she continue to leech off of Bernie who in turn is leeching off of the teams?

Now, just some Crystal in the fridge and time to call MTV Cribs.

This place also includes a gift-wrapping room-a full workshop set up exclusively for wrapping presents.

I just wanted to chime in and point out that not every American lives so well.

For instance, we’ve only got 94 rooms and parking for 35 cars at our house. We went with solid gold toilets instead of platinum to save a couple thousand dollars, which we donated.

Seriously, though, most of us are struggling to pay rent, and these articles are stinging reminders of what the top 1% does with it’s money. Is it jealousy, or truly revolting?

  21. on June 15, 2011 at 16:04 6 wheeled Tyrell

Maybe we should put together a chart of ownership of this property!

This is yet another reason why the teams should come together any buy the business from CVC, when over half the money generated by the sport flies straight out of if it is bound to end up in wasteful purchases by the “boss’s kids” .

Literally a couple of doors down from the Playboy mansion – not to shabby

(if you zoom in on that satellite image you’ll see plenty of lambos and ferraris driving around too!)

Not sure, but I guess she’s going to use a riding lawn mower to cut the grass.

  24. on June 15, 2011 at 16:51 Lon

Forget about the money and the house. Have you guys seen a picture of the young Miss Ecclestone? Absolutely molten lava hot. I had no idea Bernie had offspring of this calibre. Mrs. E must be quite something.

A little different from Petrascapes, see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulakouki/4482375846/

  26. on June 15, 2011 at 18:49 Jack

i know i’m a Formula One fan so this is going to seem hypocritical but that kind of lavish spending is just nauseating. There’s no way anybody can justify a $150 million home when about a 3rd of the world can barely afford to eat. It’s absolutely sickening, maybe when she’s on holiday with daddy she should go outside the compound gates and see what the world is really like, and why she’s a terrible person. The 400 richest people in America are worth more than the poorest 150,000, and this is that disgraceful statistic in full flow.

  27. on June 15, 2011 at 21:01 Tom

    Jeff,

“Seriously, though, most of us are struggling to pay rent, and these articles are stinging reminders of what the top 1% does with it’s money. Is it jealousy, or truly revolting?”

Probably both. Either way, methinks some kind of revolution is in order.

  28. on June 15, 2011 at 21:48 The Kitchen Cynic

first against the wall when the revolution comes…

  29. on June 16, 2011 at 00:36 Adrian Newey Jr

Perhaps the proceeds from incentives from Bahrain government for the GP to go ahead? lol

  30. on June 16, 2011 at 01:34 Frank Rocha

Someone needs to buy property in LA!
