Six hours after the race, direct from Suzuka – an 85-page e-magazine

October 7, 2012 by Joe Saward

The GrandPrix+ e-magazine is the fastest way to read about each Grand Prix. Published from the F1 paddocks all over the world – and written by journalists who are on the inside – GP+ appears around four hours after each race, featuring full reports on the race AND on qualifying. It is designed as a journal of record and not like many magazines today which provide only snapshots for those who watched the race on TV. You can download every issue into your computer or tablet – and even into your mobile phone.

In this week’s issue from Suzuka:

Lewis Hamilton – the inside story

Goodbye Michael

Suzuka 50 years ago

Bonkers team bosses

Chris Economaki remembered

Plus great photography and knowledgeable opinions.

Not being able to buy single edition of a magazine is surely going to hurt sales. I don’t have to subscribe to print media to buy an edition, Removing choice from potential customers seems an unusual way to go or am I missing something?

Yes. We do not wish to sell individual editions.

I would also prefer to see the real thing once before I subscribe.

The sample document has advertising dancing arround at the top of the page. If this was on the real page, it would put me off subscribing.

I have bought myself an I-pad so that I do not have to sit at a desk to read publications. Do you know if the document stays resident on the device, once it has been downloaded, or do you need WiFi contact all the time to stay interactive?

A PDF is downloaded so it works fine on an iPad. If you get put off by an advert on the sample, you have only good things to look forward to as we do not have these things when you sign up.

I’ve just read Gary Anderson’s comments on the Red Bull double DRS which leads to me think that the FIA really haven’t managed this situation very well, as usual. As Merc hasn’t been a leading contender for a while the principle of double DRS had been forgotten (but obviously not by Red Bull) until now, when a top flight team, world championship contenders no less, uses it to win the last two races (although they say it’s not the only reason). Everyone having accepted that this device spices-up the action we now see clever aero engineers manipulating it to carry out other other functions than its original function, again.

It’s getting far too technical to understand frankly and I wonder if the FIA really understand the long implications of their rulings. Small teams will always struggle then they have to commit already scarce resources to keep up with the leading teams on such matters. Seb Vettel jokingly said yesterday that Red Bull’s new reception (one assumes at Milton Keynes) would have to be delayed again while the team spends more money on the car, but they’re in a much better financial situation than some. For all the talk about cost cutting there’s still plenty of money sloshing around when it’s required.

Japan was the first race this year I missed. But a combination of gp+ and some internet forums managed to get me in the know.

Wacky Racers was comedy goldmine, good article! Thanks for that.

Also one more strong opinion from you guys on the Lewis deal. Let’s see if it’s the correct opinion. Anyway, I enjoy it when you speak your mind, be it on Lotus Cars management, Force India funding or Lewis-Merc deals.

If anything sums up GP+ values, then this issue hits the spot. Race report to the point, as it was a boring race. The other articles were worth the the subscription.

I think On the Grid may come back to haunt you though Joe.,I think that Lewis has gone to a manufacturer team and that means the board back home, may have a big say in how long the team stays in F1. Woking will be around whatever happens.Any ideas as to why MB think they are going to be so much better when the new regs start?

Any chance of a DT piece about Unlimited Hyrdoplanes or, the Windermere/Coniston speed week?

Hi Joe, Funnily enough, the question above is exactly what I was coming here to ask. iPad magazines which feature on their newsstand app are usually built in the same way (e.g. PDF’s) Is it not possible to put them on newsstand therefore? Allowing individual copies and subscriptions too? Surely giving away a % of sales to apple is better than having a smaller market to grab? I would love to read the odd copy here and there… Thanks for the blog though – always great reading…

Yes, if you have all the time in the world lots of things are possible. DT and I spend our lives pedalling fast to stay afloat.

    Joe,

Last season you guys sent out an email reminder/link for each new GP+. This season I don’t receive that, so its down to me remembering to fetch it. I only remember half the time so don’t feel the same value from the subscription overall (although high quality content hasn’t changed so I enjoy it just the same WHEN I do remember ).

I don’t think this is a settings issue on my side since I didn’t change anything – I just renewed. If so, it would make sense for you guys to push link to subscribers.

I have the same issue in my business; always telling employees to send me their weekly updates don’t just leave them on the the server. Its their promo :-0

    Andrew

    Glyn

The plan is to cover U-11′s run at Coniston, for us and an American outlet, so long as I get my US via all sorted in time…Love those hydros, and it was once my dream to run the Miss Freei for the kilo record, either on Coniston or Lake Washington.

Great stuff! Don’t suppose you’ll make the Qatar round after the Dubai GP?

Slightly embarrassing but, I think it was an article by you in Motor Sport (back in the day) about the Windermere week that made me go. As I say, many moons ago! If anyone can go to stand on the shore of Coniston on a very quiet morning and not get the shivers and goosebumps they ain’t got no switches!!

      Look forward to the article.

I know it’s said to death but I have absolutely no idea why you don’t do these individually? I subscribed last year but haven’t this year as I was really put off by the fact you can only sign up for what amounts to the rest of the year, so as each race goes on it’s less and less value.

The content is good and I know you say you are rushed off your feet but there is the entire off season + whenever you go on holiday to sort something out. It would take a few hours to load this into Newstand initially, then no time at all after each race. I would’ve bought this one individually had you done that
