Fernando and Nicky go dancing

January 18, 2013 by Joe Saward

photoSome people think that Fernando Alonso is rather dour and not very friendly, but at the Wrooom F1 and MotoGP Press Ski Meeting in Madonna di Campiglio, in the Italian Alps, he showed a rather different side to his character in the course of an evening event held at the Chalet Fiat, up in the mountains. It was minus 13 outside and the assembled guests were entertained by a troupe of acrobats and jugglers. Just when we all thought the show was over, the lights went up again and we were treated to the rather unusual sight of Fernando Alonso and Nicky Hayden doing a dance to amuse those inside, having donned feathered wings that had been used previously by the acrobats. The amusement ended with Hayden doing a headstand on stage…

Alonso also showed considerable prowess as an aerodynamicist, in his construction of paper aeroplanes, using the menus, and delivering very accurate machines, capable of hitting a journalist on the side of the head at 50 ft!

di Montezemolo won’t be happy, he doesn’t like two roosters in same hen house

Of course, his paper plane was not the fastest, or second fastest, or even third fastest paper plane, yet still …… !

‘Felipe, Fernando’s plane is flying further than yours, do you understand ?’

You wouldn’t happen to be the journalist in Fernando’s crosshairs, hit by his flying paper projectile, were you Joe? :-) By the way, arent you glad you chose these events to attend over the Mercedes engine unveiling? I have to say I agree with you wholeheartedly! Ferrari offeres a getaway that includes jugglers with plumage and their number one driver letting his hair down. Sounds like great fun to me! Cheers!

Not my own favourite driver, but he is by no means as bad as he is made out to be, he has his human side too.

  5. on January 18, 2013 at 12:40 pm verstappen

How many times did he hit you?

    • on January 18, 2013 at 2:57 pm Joe Saward

            That is just his hairdo!

Can’t pay any testament to his character but i’m often surprised that despite thinking he’d be the driver you’d see least he sometimes pops up in random ordinary places, strangest being Starbucks (other coffee shops are available) in the shopping mall in Suzuka one night with a couple of his friends…waved to all the staff as he left which made their day.

    Joe,

Have you heard any inside news on the Force India rumors that are circulating (on the verge of collapse?). They deny it (on Autosport), but I find it peculiar that the 2nd driver won’t be announced until after the car launches. Is this common?. Is di Resta even confirmed as the first driver at this point? I have assumed so, but haven’t heard anything official from the team.

    • on January 18, 2013 at 6:16 pm Joe Saward

      I have heard nothing.

  13. on January 18, 2013 at 6:12 pm Chris R.

Nicky Hayden is a motorcycle racer for Ducati

    • on January 19, 2013 at 2:11 am Scuderia McLaren

    • on January 19, 2013 at 6:34 am bozzlehead

And I might add, a Moto GP World Champion!

Rmour has it that Fernando’s plane was an early mule used to test the callibration of Ferrari’s new 60% wind tunnel.
