Foolish thoughts in April

Each year on April 1 there are attempts by people to con others into believing daft stories. This year we had the usual collection of silly things that appeared in print. My colleague Adam Cooper reported that Tony Fernandes had had the idea of sorting out the Lotus versus Lotus problems with a football match between those involved. It sounds pretty unlikely given that the Team Lotus legal team seems to have been doing rather well in the hearings, which have been taking place behind closed doors. A Dutch website suggested that Michael Schumacher is threatening to leave the Mercedes GP Petronas team to race in DTM. That may end up being a valid prediction…

An English newspaper reported that the British GP will be cancelled because the price of fuel is too high… and a website came up with the novel idea of a secret relationship between Red Bull racing and the vacuum cleaner inventor James Dyson, which is supposed to explain the success of the team’s RB7…

  1. I was under the impression it was the guys behind Sidepodcast that had come up with the football match idea, or did they themselves hear it somewhere else first?

  2. Behind closed doors? Don’t much like the sound of that, a stitch-up could become so much easier without press scrutiny and publicity of the evidence that’s being put forward.

  3. “a website came up with the novel idea of a secret relationship between Red Bull racing and the vacuum cleaner inventor James Dyson, which is supposed to explain the success of the team’s RB7”

    Suckers …

  4. “and a website came up with the novel idea of a secret relationship between Red Bull racing and the vacuum cleaner inventor James Dyson, which is supposed to explain the success of the team’s RB7”

    That would suck…

    /Sorry

  5. The news that really upset me was this one form an Italian website. They suggested Pirelli and FIA have found a new rule to improve the show: Pirelli will bring just ONE set of special extreme fast tyres and they will give decide randomly which team would use it in race. Let’s hope Bernie did not read this news because he would decide to really change the rule.

Anyway, this is the link in case you want to laugh

Obviously they are using a multi vortex exhaust and a ball drive! :-~)

  7. I remember one that created a lot of interest from both dealers and cusomers. BMW GB ran an ad in the Telegraph ( where else? ) that claimed a new technology which would allow the monitoring of tyre pressures on a display in the IP (instrument panel ) Ironically impossible at the time, about 25 years ago, but now not a big deal at all.

  8. Joe, how do you know TL is doing well during hearings when they’re being held behind closed door?

  9. Funny that Adam Cooper came up with the football match idea a few days after Mr C suggested the same thing on the sidepodcast Debrief.

  10. BBC reported the European GP fuel issue one, but I liked the Hispania one “expecting to challenge Virgin and Team Lotus!”

  11. Hello Joe,

Great to see that the Michael Schumacher article on my website even got you’re attention. I wrote it myself. The article was a great hit for my website.

Who knows, maybe Michael will switch to DTM if the current F1 season appears to be another worse season.

I am a great fan of you and you’re website and i visit it often. Keep up the good work and keep visiting my website.

    Kind regards,

    Frans
