The world is full of instant experts and armchair geniuses, but I think it is wise for Formula 1 to let the alchemists at Pirelli work their magic and figure out what it was that caused the tyre failures at Silverstone before mud starts to fly.
They Pirelli guys are the experts and the vast majority of people who watch F1 have not a clue what is in an F1 tyre and how it is made, let alone how it works. If it were easy what happened on Sunday would not have happened. So rather than speculate and waste energy we should wait to hear what Pirelli concludes. That, bizarrely, is likely to be the easy bit. The tough job is get the teams to agree to do something about it.
However, I think it is fair to say that the mess at Silverstone is a clear result of having tyres that have not been properly track-tested. One hopes that F1 will learn from this and that the powers-that-be will understand that sometimes politics creates dangerous situations. If it is impossible for people to see beyond their own selfish needs, then the sport must find someone to bully them into doing what is necessary.
It is a sign of the times that there is no longer anyone with that kind of clout…
