Mark Webber has emerged from a sizeable crash in the WEC race at Interlagos, in the same place as he crashed heavily in a Jaguar F1 car back in 2003. It is not yet clear exactly what happened, but Webber and the AF Corse Ferrari of Matteo Cressoni went into the wall together at the fast left-hander, just before the pitlane entry. There is no space there for run-off. The Porsche hit the wall side-on and then slewed across the road into the inside wall. There was a small oil fire after the crash.
Webber gave a thumbs up when being stretchered away from the car and Porsche Motorsport later tweeted “Driver OK”.
The race ended under caution with Webber’s team-mates Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb giving Porsche its first win since returning to sports cars this year. The trio finished ahead of the Toyota of Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi with the Audi of nine-time 24 Hour of Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen finishing third in his last race, with team-mates Lucas di Grassi and Loic Duval.
