The paddock in Melbourne was quiet yesterday but the sun was shining and everyone seemed keen to get the season going. I laughed somewhat when Renault used a surfing theme to launch the new (crème anglaise) colour scheme because, in the lounge at Charles de Gaulle en route to Melbourne, Cyril Abiteboul and I had a discussion about surfing and I see now that he was teasing me gently – without me even realising I was being teased. Well, good for him. Still, I get to tease teams as well… Today (Australian time) is the day Aston Martin announces its plans in F1. Yes, there still are some. Manufacturer power in F1 grows – but only a tiny little bit. Don’t expect anything with Force India. It is not happening with them. That idea went up in smoke along with Vijay Mallya’s trousers. Still, it was never a great marketing fit.
Aston Martin is James Bond.
Mallya? The name’s Bond. Junk Bond.
