Six hours after the race…

Screen Shot 2017-06-11 at 23.48.44.pngThe Canadian Grand Prix was a tense and exciting race, although it was fairly clear from the start, as the Ferraris were swamped by the teams around them, that it was going to be a Mercedes day. Max Verstappen blitzed from fifth to second but he soon disappeared with a mechanical failure. Sebastian Vettel damaged a front wing on the Max’s Red Bull and dropped to the back, while Kimi bounced off a wall and found himself in a rumble with the two Force Indias. The team looked like there might be th chance for a podium for Esteban Ocon, but Sergio Perez refused to let the youngster go ahead and attack Dan Ricciardo and so Ocon and Perez were eventually gobbled up and spat out by the charging Vettel. Ocon was the star of the afternoon (apart from Hamilton, of course) but the Canadian fans and media probably will not have noticed that much because Lance Stroll finally managed to get it together and picked up his first points with ninth place. It was a solid effort and will give the youngster confidence after a tough start to his F1 career.

  1. Joe, question ? what is the difference between the 6:00 PM blog and the 9:00 PM blog ?? they look the same to me. Please inform an old guy like me. Please. Thanks.

  2. “Sebastian Vettel damaged a front wing on the Max’s Red Bull”

Joe, let me explain how cause and effect works

    1. Technically correct Gary – Max was ahead, albeit on the outside. The problem for Seb was Bottas on inside, nowhere to go.

    2. Vettel admitted that Vestappen was not at fault. It was a racing incident that often happens in what can be the chaos of a race start, pure and simple and nothing more. No-one complained to the stewards. No fault was attributed to anyone, and that’s what that statement means.

    1. No problem with Perez not capitulating to Ocon.

But, he needs to explain why he blocked Ocon so effectively several times, then let Vettel past so easily.

      1. Of course, that didn’t suit number 44 championship position, blocking number 5 would have been better then blocking his team mate.

        1. I fail to see what this has to do with HAM#44. One of us is being dense, and I think I know which it is.

    2. Being a fly on Force India’s wall you will be surprised how nice and gentle will Fernley talk to his drivers, they are both worth a loth of money, the asker less than the refuser.

  3. Thanks again for another terrific issue

It was a good race with strong TV Direction

I was slightly irritated by the UK C4 highlights. Show started at 22.30 UK time but the preamble went on forever which meant the race highlights finishing very late for a “school night”…

    1. Too late for me as well, and my PVR refused to record it as I found out the next day. So for the first time GP+ was my sole race informant.

In the past I would have used Nowtv, to watch live, but instead of the three day pass which I have been encouraging them to offer, or the week sports pass I have always used before for non FTA races, they have tied the week sports pass to a supposedly free entertainment package pass, for which they will start charging you and which auto renews every month unless you cancel it. I do not buy anything with auto-renew included. Thus my F1 viewing decreases.

Canada had a very low viewing figure apparently down 19% on last year.

      1. rpaco, do you not have access to Channel 4’s post-TV online output?

This season they’ve generally been putting the GP material up within an hour of each segment of the TV output finishing, so the Canada race highlights were there waiting for you for Monday breakfast, and for small-hours-supper for those of us without an early Monday morning awaiting.

  4. Good race, great issue. Loved the Mont-Tremblant story: I remember reading race reports over years ago, but this is amazing background and the Stroll connection is fascinating. The name is interesting: do you know if there was once an earthquake?

Thanks again to the GP+ team

    1. It was an Indian legend that gave Mont Tremblant its name. The Algonquin called it Manitou-Ewitchi-Saga, after the Indian god of the wilderness who, when angry, would send rocks crashing down the mountainside. The odd time rocks do fall down onto the track at a corner called Namarow during regional races! No connection we think.. 🙂

  5. Joe, I watched FP2 and Qualy, and in the feed of one of them, I saw a journo writing in a green book, which I’m presuming was you.

      1. You were in the background of the TV no end of times this week, Joe. I never see DT though. Does he only come out at night?

        1. I’ll leave him to reply to that, but I do tend to spend more time in the paddock because we have different demands on our time

  6. Hi Joe,

I did notice a #McLarenDeloitte on Fernandos steering wheel in the weekend just been. What happened to KPMG?

    1. Don’t worry. I should research then ask, not ask then research. Copy/paste job:

“The technology arm of McLaren today announced a new partnership with Big Four rival Deloitte. The announcement from McLaren means that a 10-year deal – to develop tech and data analytic tools – with KPMG has ended after just three years. Philip Davidson, managing partner at KPMG UK, said it was a “mutual decision with McLaren to end our formal alliance”
