Dennis to depart?

It is anticipated that Ron Dennis will announce in a few hours in Woking that he is to stand down from all involvement in the McLaren Formula 1 team. People will draw their own conclusions about why this is happening. There is bound to be speculation that there has been some kind of a back room deal to remove Dennis from the team so that it can go on competing in F1 without an FIA sanction. Dennis’s battles with the federation have been well chronicled and there is bound to be a perception that this is just another round of that long-running saga. Perhaps it is the final battle, perhaps not. The good news is that it will almost certainly mean that McLaren will be around for the whole World Championship, even though the cars are not very competitive at the moment.

When all is said and done, fans of the sport want to talk about racing and not about the political shenanigans that go on in the background in F1. If the day comes when the politics is more important than the sport, then the sport is no more.

  1. I hate to think that Ron is being forced out of a team he built into the best in the business. Of course he will still own his shares and still have the position as head of the McLaren group but publicly Max will have won.

In light of these current events (and a couple other notable occurrences in the prior ’08 season), perhaps a reasonable argument may be made that this day has already come.

  3. I guess this would be down to Mercedes pressure. I have my doubts as to weather he would walk away for good though, unless he believed Max was a few steps behind him.
