Keeping it in the family

The South East Asian Games in Jakarta may not seem like a likely place to pick up Formula 1 information, but former F1 driver Alex Yoong and his family have been making waves (literally) there in the waterskiing competitions. The former Minardi driver won two silver medals in the men’s slalom and jumping competitions. The 35-year-old Malaysian, the country’s first F1 driver, had previously won a bronze medal back in 1997 but has not competed since. This was not the only success for the Yoong Family as Alex’s sister Philippa (33) won a gold medal in the women’s slalom, 14 years after her first gold back in 1997.

The family’s success was completed by half-sister Aaliyah, the reigning Asian junior champion, who became the youngest athlete to win a gold medal in the games at eight, having won the Waterski tricks events, despite competing against much older rivals.

  1. I know Alex, he spent a couple of days as my guest at an ASLI conference. He is a nice bloke. I had occasion to go to the Malaysian sports centre in Bukit Jalil. They had a comparison chart of a Young F3 driver (Yoong) and a track athlete/other on a stress machine test. Guess who was the fittest?
Looks like the whole family are athletic. Maybe the youngest will be an F1 star of the future!
