Something to listen to…

In case you are interested, one of the things I do from time to time in order to try to make F1 a little more inclusive for the fans – in addition to the Audience with Joe events – is podcasts with the Sidepodcast organisation, under the title “An Aside with Joe”.

The latest edition includes discussion about the F1 calendar, the question of double points for the last race, drivers having personal numbers, the F1 Strategy Group, the psychology of running a pay driver and sorting out the money in the midfield.

It is called “That’s what Formula 1 people do” and you can list to it, by clicking here.

  1. You know when you see a photo of someone and imagine how their voice sounds. Well Joe’s voice sounds nothing like my prediction.

  2. Sweet something to listen too in my lunch break, thanks Joe. great addition. Will they be announced here when they come out each time?

  3. Hi Joe, you aimed for ‘entertaining and informative’, the show delivered in large doses of each, and it saved me from having to listen to ‘Womans Hour’ during breakfast. Thanks.
Thanks also for the constant updates and insight here on the blog, the hard work is always appreciated.
Cheers and happy new year to you.

  4. Long time reader of the blog/GP+, first time poster.
Love the “Aside” but who is the guy that fields the questions to yourself? He seems a little bit too enthusiastic/feeling the need to impress you which comes over as quite irritating and quite cringe worthy at times.

      1. I like both of the individuals, who produce Sidepodcast. They seem to be genuine fans, and offer a fan’s perspective of F1 as well as generating healthy debate. It’s also free.

      1. Thanks for another year of putting up with the B.S. Quite the frenzy of recent activity suggests someone is getting ready to wind things down for a well deserved holiday break, thanks for your generosity and effort! Thank you for the quality content all the best to you & yours and Merry Christmas if that’s still allowed

  5. Regarding the “cost cap”. How is such a thing policed? How can the running of CFD equipment be monitored (or wind tunnels for that matter)?

    1. As most of the teams are running largish computing clusters for CFD then I imagine that the FIA can impose runtime logs that the teams cannot edit or subvert.

It might be more complicated if you are using a distributed network of desktop workstations, but not impossible I guess.

Similarly, the tunnel data logging might have a data log for the air speed or the fan rpm that logs the number of hours runs, This could similarly be closed off from team tampering. Running the tunnel without data logging is a fairly useless exercise.

Though someone with some knowledge of computer systems admin may now tell me I’m talking rubbish…

  6. Thanks Joe – just finished listening, while lying on the sofa drinking a glass of wine. As close to heaven as it gets. The theatre anecdotes were highly amusing.

And a big thank you to the hosts too. They both add to the show in no small way.

  7. Thanks for doing these Joe and Mr+Mrs C.

I’m sure a lot of people like me, who were introduced through the “Aside..” series, are now subscribers to GP+.

  8. Informative as usual, thanks for persisting to do these despite an increasingly manic schedule of races, writing, forums etc.

Don’t agree with the ‘value’ proposition of dropping the GP+ archive without lowering the price (even a token amount) – same price, half the actual content with very little cost to yourselves apart from saving on token bandwidth fees – as it seems to rub against your perfectly valid comments about F1’s handling of money.

Still, it’s entirely your content that you sweat buckets to produce and you can do as you wish! šŸ™‚
