A tunnel collapses at Spa

On Sunday morning a section of tunnel under the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium collapsed, creating a large hole in one of the run-off areas at Blanchimont. Around one third of the tunnel, which provides access to the karting circuit on the inside of the track, fell. Fortunately there was no-one in the tunnel at the time.

The tunnel was built in 1978 and it seems that the collapse was due simply to the age of the installation, which was constructed from corrugated metal plates, bolted together to form the arch. The technique is used less often in modern construction with the preference these days being reinforced concrete.

The Belgian circuit underwent considerable redevelopment in 2007 with a new pit and paddock area and a reprofiled final corner and pitlane entrance.

  1. Looks like there were some cracks on the track as well where this was near. They were small cracks, but who knows what they can develop into. Let’s hope its all fixed by the time the race comes…they have plenty of time to make it whole again.

  2. I’m sure that all be well in plenty of time for the GP in August.

But I was supposed to be doing 2 trackdays there this coming weekend, and they have been cancelled. Doh!
