How to start an F1 rumour…

In a few hours from now you will, no doubt, start to read stories about the possibility of a Grand Prix in Bolivia. The first stories have just begun to break and these will soon be copied and turned into something that they are not. There is nothing of note to the story. FIA President Jean Todt is in Bolivia, as part of a tour of South America, and had a half hour meeting with President Evo Morales on Saturday, to discuss road safety and developing motor sport in the country.

After the meeting Todt told the Bolivian media that the president was very interested in working with the FIA to promote the sport, presumably because this would help him to generate tourist dollars. The country has much to commend it with the Andes in the west and Amazonian rain forests in the east. It boasts the celebrated Lake Titicaca and various Inca sites, including the Temple of Kalasasaya. However the country has a population of just 11 million (about the same as Belgium) and an average wage of $4,455 a year.

The only likely international motor sport that could help Bolivia in a cost-effective manner would be inclusion in the Dakar Rally, which has been running in South America since 2009. This takes place in Argentina and Chile, but could be extended to include Bolivia, without too much difficulty.

    1. All motorsport activities are linked to the FIA to a lesser or greater extent, if only through licences. Nominally, even NASCAR is an FIA-related activity

  1. Talking of speculation.

What about Bernie’s comment in India that 20 races per season is an absolute limit and 16 is his preference.

Has Mr. E pulled off another masterstroke by encouraging the building of all the new tracks in order to stoke up a future bidding war?
