McLaren’s first World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi has decided to try his hand at journalism, writing a monthly blog item for McLaren.

“I am delighted that I am to have been invited to write a regular blog for McLaren’s official website,” he said. “I’m a racer, not a writer, but I hope I’ll be able to communicate my racer’s passion in what I write.”

Meanwhile in Qatar, HRH Prince Charles, has dropped in to see the Williams Technology Centre in the Qatar Science and Technology Park, as part of a tour of Gulf countries. His Royal Highness was shown the road safety simulators being developed that use a realistic car chassis and sophisticated artificial intelligence to train local drivers and help reduce road traffic accidents in Qatar; and then watched a demonstration of the Williams Advanced Engineering flywheel energy storage technology.

  1. The crashes out there often involve cars in the upper price bracket being driven by rich but inexperienced young men extremely fast.
The flywheel should have been used in F1, it is far more ecological than the electrical system. Used for tens of years in China on commercial vehicles ideal for hilly terrain.
The only downside is the danger of a breakout. (maybe they would call it an axis deviation event)

  2. Back in the 70s, Fittipaldi used to write a column for the Brazilian “Quatro Rodas” magazine after each GP. It was very informative and entertaining. Jody Scheckter also had a column in that magazine in a very similar format (it was probably translated). I guess it was more common for drivers to write back then.
Fittipaldi is a very likeable fellow, as everybody knows. He translates that to his writing very well. This is a very good move by McLaren, a team he has strong ties with.

  3. More recently, he also did a column for Metro (the free British paper that you get on public transport) about A1GP after every race in the 08/09 season (he was the team principal of Team Brazil). So it seems that whilst he is first and foremost a racer, he does have a soft spot for writing! Note too that, given the infrequency of A1GP races that season, this could also be classified as “dropping in”!
