It was a rather embarrassing Friday morning for the authorities in Sochi, when the marshals arrived on the circuit to discover that the track had been coated with hydraulic fluid. It transpired that this was the result of a track clean machine that did its work overnight. The problem was that while the front end of the machine was busy cleaning, there was an hydraulic leak at the back end that was creating problems.
Oops. Or a ploy to make the racing more interesting?
Accidental, or, part of the spice it up a bit toolbox, like the random wet race sprinklers idea?
Apparently a small, white haired octoganarian was seen in the vicinity earlier sneaking away with a spanner in his hand muttering something about “spicing up the show” …
Sounds like a good analogy for the Russian economy – both in communist times and now.
On the upper hand, these usually start up in -40C as well because, you know, Russia.
Having been following Russian trucks in the past, as they grind along, belching smoke and dribbling assorted fluids from every orifice, who would be surprised.
Poutine will fix it(with pictures provided!)
Obvious a Honda cleaning truck.
Which back-marker team ‘encouraged’ them and were they able to choose the line?
I’ve known it happen several times on race circuits. Pre-use inspection on all contract plant machines is appalling.
I’m expecting more of these blunders 🙂
Welcome to Russia.
I’m trying not to see a metaphor for F1’s business model here…
What other sites say – it was diesel fuel spilled, not hydraulic fluid.
Probably no big difference, under normal circumstances.
But in the wake of recent events – ufff…
Again diesel in the spotlight 🙂
P.S. Organizers praise themselves for quick recovery of the track back to usable condition (30 minutes delay).
There were two official versions. One was hydraulic fluid, the other diesel. It depends on who one spoke to.
Two official versions, at odds with each other. Sounds like government to me.
“Quick recovery”? Didn’t look like much urgency from the BBC footage…
The report that the errant fluid was diesel has led more than one commentator to ponder whether VAG have made an entry into F1 without telling anyone.
They provided some software that indicates it was Hydraulic fluid. It was nice to see their executives playing stupid in front of Congress though, good to see all that hard work done by slippery Bankers that crashed a global economy built upon.
Nasty unwanted emissions coming from the back of a vehicle which is supposed to be clean? It wasn’t a Volkswagen was it?
Maybe made by the same collective the produced the errant cruise missiles 🙂
Kamaz rules – and tend to be somewhat leaky
